Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman Gifts $5 Million in Stock

Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman gave away 200,000 shares of eBay stock last week, valued at about $5 million. In addition, she sold 37,500 shares for $948,277.51.

As a member of eBay's Board of Directors, Whitman is required to file notices of stock transactions with the Securities and Exchange Commission, but the names of recipients of stock gifts do not appear on filings. Whitman and her husband created the Griffith R. Harsh IV and Margaret C Whitman Charitable Foundation 2 years ago, a likely recipient of last week's stock gift.

The couple had donated 300,000 shares of eBay stock to the foundation in 2006, with an estimated fair market value of $9.4 million at the time.

Whitman stepped down from eBay in March and is thought to have a remote chance of being named number two on the GOP ticket for John McCain, on whose campaign she works.
